The Lifestyle and Religion: Navigating the Conflict
4 min read · faq
A Common but Rarely Discussed Tension
Many lifestyle participants come from religious backgrounds, and the tension between their faith and their lifestyle choices is more common than the community typically acknowledges. This tension is real and deserves honest attention.
The Spectrum of Responses
Lifestyle participants from religious backgrounds navigate this tension in many different ways. Some compartmentalise their lifestyle activities as separate from their spiritual life. Others have worked through a theological framework that reconciles their faith with consensual non-monogamy. Some have moved away from organised religion while retaining personal spiritual practices. And some continue to experience genuine conflict that they have not fully resolved.
There is no single right answer, and no one in the lifestyle community should tell you how to navigate your own spiritual life.
What the Community Can Offer
The lifestyle community is generally non-judgmental about participants' religious backgrounds. You are unlikely to face criticism for your faith in most lifestyle spaces, and you are equally unlikely to face pressure to abandon it.
Seeking Support
If the tension between your faith and your lifestyle choices is causing significant distress, speaking with a therapist who is both lifestyle-affirming and respectful of religious belief can be helpful. These practitioners exist, though they may require some searching to find.
Privacy
For participants from religious communities where lifestyle participation would be particularly stigmatised, discretion is especially important. The privacy practices described elsewhere in the Velmora Education Centre apply with particular force in these situations.
