What Is New Relationship Energy?

New relationship energy (NRE) is the intense excitement, infatuation, and heightened emotional state that characterises the early stages of a new connection. It is the butterflies, the constant thinking about someone, the feeling that everything is more vivid and exciting.

NRE is a real physiological phenomenon — it involves elevated levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. It is wonderful, but it is also temporary, and it can temporarily affect your judgment and priorities.

Why NRE Can Be Problematic

The problem with NRE is not the feeling itself but the decisions people sometimes make while under its influence. NRE can cause people to: neglect existing relationships in favour of the new connection, make major decisions (changing relationship agreements, introducing a new partner to children) that they would not make with sober judgment, and overestimate the depth and durability of a new connection.

Managing NRE Responsibly

Recognise it for what it is. NRE is a temporary neurochemical state, not a reliable indicator of long-term compatibility or the depth of a connection.

Maintain your existing relationship routines. Continue to invest time and energy in your primary relationship. Do not let the excitement of a new connection crowd out the care and attention your existing partner deserves.

Make major decisions later. If NRE is prompting you to change relationship agreements or make other significant decisions, wait until the initial intensity has settled. Decisions made in the grip of NRE often look different six months later.

Communicate openly. Tell your primary partner what you are experiencing. Transparency about NRE — "I am really excited about this new connection and I want to make sure I am not neglecting you" — is far better than trying to manage it secretly.
