Recognising Red Flags in the Lifestyle

Why Red Flags Matter
The lifestyle community is generally warm, welcoming, and ethical. But like any community, it includes individuals who do not respect boundaries, who misrepresent themselves, or who behave in ways that are harmful to others.
Learning to recognise red flags early — before an in-person meeting or encounter — protects you and your partner and helps maintain the quality of the community.
Red Flags in Online Interactions
Pressure to move faster than you are comfortable with. Requests for explicit photos before you have established trust. Inconsistency between their profile and their messages. Reluctance to video chat before meeting in person. Excessive compliments that feel performative rather than genuine. Dismissiveness when you mention your boundaries.
Red Flags at In-Person Meetings
Significant differences between their profile and their appearance or personality. Excessive alcohol consumption. Dismissiveness or minimisation when boundaries are mentioned. Pressure to escalate beyond what you have agreed to. Unwillingness to discuss STI prevention. Negative comments about other lifestyle participants.
Red Flags During Encounters
Ignoring or minimising a safe word or consent signal. Attempting to remove a condom without agreement. Continuing after a clear request to stop. Pressure to do something that was not previously agreed to.
Trusting Your Instincts
Your instincts are one of your most valuable safety tools. If something feels off — even if you cannot articulate exactly why — trust that feeling. You do not need to justify your discomfort to anyone. A polite "this is not working for us" is sufficient.
What to Do When You Encounter Red Flags
If you encounter red flags at a venue, speak to staff. If you encounter them online, block and report the person. If you encounter them during an encounter, use your safe word and leave. Your safety is more important than politeness.
