Active Listening

Lifestyle Glossary · relationship-structures

Active listening is a focused communication practice that prioritizes full attention, reflection, and clarification. It asks listeners to pause judgment, paraphrase what they hear, and check understanding before responding. In intimate and non-monogamous contexts, it helps partners feel heard, reduces misunderstandings, and creates space for negotiating desires and boundaries. Active listening is neither passive nor therapeutic by default; it’s a learned skill that supports consent, de-escalation, and mutually respectful conversations about feelings, logistics, and relationship agreements.
