Co-Regulation
Lifestyle Glossary · relationship-structures
Co-regulation is the process by which people support each other’s emotional equilibrium through attuned presence, calming cues, and responsive behavior. Rather than expecting someone to self-soothe alone, co-regulation involves noticing distress, offering steadying responses—like a calm tone, predictable routine, or practical help—and adjusting until the person feels safer to engage. It’s widely used in parenting, friendships, and intimate partnerships. Done well, co-regulation builds resilience and secure connection; done poorly, it can become overbearing, so boundaries and consent are important.
