SSC, an acronym for Safe, Sane, and Consensual, is a foundational ethical framework within BDSM and kink communities used to establish the boundaries of acceptable play. It mandates that all activities should be physically and psychologically safe, conducted by individuals in a sound state of mind, and based on the clear, enthusiastic consent of all participants. As a standard, SSC emphasizes the reduction of unnecessary danger and the preservation of participant well-being through strict adherence to safety protocols and pre-negotiated limits.

The framework is often contrasted with Risk-Aware Consensual Kink (RACK). While SSC centers on a specific safe, sane, and consensual standard as the primary benchmark for play, RACK acknowledges that many activities involve inherent risks that cannot be fully mitigated. Instead of aiming for a universal "safe" label, RACK requires informed, consensual risk awareness, where participants take responsibility for understanding and accepting the specific hazards involved in their chosen activities.
