Validation

Lifestyle Glossary · Relationships

Validation is the act of recognizing that another person's feelings, experience, or perspective is real and understandable, even when you do not share the same view or agree with every conclusion. It can sound simple: “I can see why that felt difficult,” or “Thank you for telling me.”

Validation is not the same as surrendering your own needs or ignoring boundaries. In healthy relationships, it creates enough emotional safety for honest communication, repair, and clearer decisions. It is especially valuable when people are discussing vulnerability, jealousy, conflict, or a change in expectations.
