The Door They Finally Opened

Forty-one years married, and Helen still hadn't told Robert what she wanted — not directly, not in so many words. It took a retirement, a long drive to the coast, and a hotel bar conversation with a couple half their age to loosen something she'd carried since 1987. Robert listened the way he always had, patient, a little stunned, turning the idea over like it might still be a joke. It wasn't. Somewhere between the second bottle of wine and the walk back to their room, he took her hand and said the thing she hadn't let herself hope for: that he'd wondered too, for longer than she knew.
