Five Names on the Guest List

By the time Mara turned into the gravel drive, the cottage windows had become amber squares against the October dusk. At forty-two, she liked facts, and the message thread had offered them plainly: five names, five separate yeses, no assumptions. Celia, fifty, had offered her cottage for privacy and honesty. Inside, rain tapped the cedar roof. Julian, forty-six, arranged pears on slate; Noor, thirty-nine, set out tea; Elise, forty-four, stood by the bookshelves; and Celia opened the door, then stepped back rather than reaching for Mara. The courtesy eased something in her chest. They had not come together by chance. For three weeks, messages had covered hopes, comfortable language, and what would make departure feel cared for. Celia had called the evening a possibility, not a promise. No one owed an escalation. Anyone could change their mind, ask for quiet, or call a stop without apology. Phones were away; wine was optional; the guest room was available to anyone needing space. The care in those practical sentences had made Mara more curious than flirtation could have.
