The Garden Behind the Studio
By seven, the conservatory was glowing from within. Its iron ribs and rain-streaked panes belonged to an old botanical garden, but the rooms beyond had been remade for an art preview: raw plaster, pale wine, sculptures among potted citrus trees. Asha Mensah, thirty-two, paused beneath the doorframe and let the leaf-scented warmth settle around her. Her husband, Callum Reid, thirty-five, touched the small of her back with the quiet question he had been asking all week. Still glad we came? Asha smiled. She restored cracked ceramics for a living; Callum designed theatre lighting. Neither could remember the last time they had gone somewhere simply to see what it might offer. They had been married for six years and had lately admitted that routine had become too efficient. Not unhappy, Asha had told him. Never that. Just fluent in schedules. Before leaving home, they agreed to be curious without performing certainty: stay together when they wished, speak plainly if either felt unsettled, and leave before the evening became an obligation. Callum had nodded, then tucked the plan away as naturally as an umbrella. At the preview, he did not steer her through the crowd. He waited for her to choose the first room.
