The Little Room Off the Ballroom
Mira had expected the gala to be loud in the uncomplicated way celebrations often were: bright brass, full glasses, a room of people dressed to be noticed. Instead, the music seemed to press gently at the edges of her concentration. Across the ballroom, Owen stood beneath a cascade of suspended lights in his midnight-blue dinner jacket, talking to a colleague while watching her over the rim of his champagne glass. At thirty-four, Mira knew that look. It was not a request, not exactly. It was the quiet question they had learned to ask each other without making either of them responsible for the answer. They had promised one another they would stay only as long as the evening felt enjoyable. It had become their favorite kind of agreement: a plan with room inside it. When a photographer began arranging guests near the dance floor and the band shifted into something grander, Owen appeared at her elbow. “Want a quieter view?” he asked. Mira smiled, relieved by the option and curious about the expression on his face. “For a minute,” she said. “Then we decide again.”
