The Seat He Kept

At thirty-eight, Julian had learned that wanting an unfamiliar thing did not make it a demand. Across their kitchen table, he had told Mara about the private, imagined arrangement that stirred him: her being admired by someone they both trusted, while he remained present enough to be known. Mara, also thirty-eight, had not answered quickly. She reached for his hand, asked what part made him feel most alive, and listened until the fantasy became less a shadow between them than a language they could examine together. They spent months deciding what it would and would not be. There would be no surprises, no borrowed courage, no performance for anyone else. They chose Elias, their forty-one-year-old friend, because he was patient and because he asked better questions than most people offered answers. On the evening they finally met at a quiet private lounge, Mara carried the freedom to change her mind; Julian carried the same. Elias knew both facts before he opened the door.
