The Second Invitation

The villa sat above Positano like it had grown there — cut stone, bougainvillea spilling over the terrace rail, the sea somewhere below catching the last light. Elena had worn the green dress. Marcus had noticed the moment she stepped out of the car, and said nothing, which was somehow worse. Dinner was for four. The other couple — older, unhurried, the kind of confident that comes from a marriage that's survived its own honesty — had been introduced only as Claire and Theo. Wine kept arriving. Conversation moved from restaurants to relationships to the particular ache of wanting something you're not sure you're allowed to want. Claire asked Elena a question over dessert that had nothing to do with dessert. Elena laughed, looked at Marcus, and didn't answer right away. That was the thing about the second invitation. The first one was just dinner. The second one was a decision nobody had said out loud yet.
