Three Glasses on the Terrace

Elena noticed the three glasses before she noticed the river. They waited on the narrow stone ledge of Mira’s terrace apartment: one holding mineral water with a twist of lemon, one a pale amber tea gone cool in the evening air, and one a small pour of red wine. Across the river, the city had begun its nightly performance, windows kindling one by one until the opposite bank looked less like a skyline than a field of patient stars. Elena, thirty-eight, rested her hands on the terrace rail and let the view give her something steady to look at. Adam joined her without touching her. At forty-one, he had learned that care could be visible in the distance one kept as much as in the closeness one offered. Priya, forty, came through the open doors a moment later, carrying a folded throw and the quiet concentration of someone who had arranged an evening with intention rather than momentum. “Before anything else,” she said, setting the throw over a chair, “are we all still glad we came?” The question landed softly. Elena looked from Priya to Adam, then back again. “Yes,” she said. Adam smiled, not as an answer for anyone else, but as his own. “Yes.”
