Two Doors Down

The resort had booked them adjoining suites by accident — or so the front desk claimed. Naomi and Chris hadn't asked for it, hadn't requested it, and yet there it was: a locked connecting door between their room and the one belonging to a couple they'd met exactly once, briefly, at the welcome cocktail hour. The first night, nobody touched the door. The second night, someone knocked. It became the shape of the whole week — not a decision made once, but one remade every evening, the door either staying locked or not, the four of them learning what they wanted one knock at a time. Naomi found she looked forward to the not-knowing more than anything the vacation brochure had promised. By the last night, the door didn't need to be knocked on at all. It was already open.
