Emotional Labor
Lifestyle Glossary · relationship-structures
Emotional labor is the often-invisible effort spent managing others’ feelings, smoothing interactions, or maintaining relational harmony. It includes anticipating needs, initiating emotional work like apologies or planning, and absorbing stress to protect relationships. In partnerships and communities, emotional labor can be unevenly distributed and lead to fatigue or resentment if unacknowledged. Naming emotional labor lets partners negotiate fairer expectations, redistribute tasks, and create agreements that recognize care work without turning it into solely one person’s burden.
