Vaginismus

Lifestyle Glossary · Wellbeing

Vaginismus is a condition in which the muscles around the vagina tighten involuntarily, sometimes making penetration painful, difficult, or not possible. The experience can vary from person to person and may be influenced by physical, emotional, or neurological factors. It is not a failure, a lack of interest, or something a person should be expected to push through.

Comfort, choice, and consent come first. Partners can be supportive by listening, removing pressure, and staying open to forms of intimacy that feel good and safe. A clinician with relevant sexual-health or pelvic-floor expertise can help assess symptoms and discuss care; this definition is informational and not a diagnosis.
